Key Policies You Need to Know
UNISS welcomes applicants who are committed to personal growth, professional conduct, and the standards of the salon sciences industry. To qualify for enrollment, applicants must:
- Be at least 16 years of age. Applicants who are 16 may be required to have a cosigner.
- Provide proof of 10th grade completion or equivalent, such as a high school diploma, GED certificate, or recognized homeschool credential.
- Attend a pre-enrollment orientation or tour, which may be conducted in person or virtually.
- Review and acknowledge UNISS policies, including the handbook, satisfactory academic progress policy, and enrollment agreement.
- Submit a completed admissions application.
Prior to enrollment, applicants will be asked to provide documentation verifying their eligibility, which may include government-issued photo identification and a copy of their birth certificate and/or Social Security card. UNISS reserves the right to deny admission to applicants who do not meet these requirements.
UNISS currently operates as a cash-pay institution. Tuition covers the cost of instruction and training required to complete the program. Students are also responsible for the cost of their student kit, textbooks, and other educational materials. Current tuition, kit costs, and required fees are provided to applicants prior to enrollment and outlined in the enrollment agreement.
Students who withdraw or are terminated from a program may be eligible for a tuition refund based on the percentage of the program completed at the time of withdrawal. Refunds are processed within 30 days of formal withdrawal or termination notification.
UNISS Tuition Refund Schedule
Program Completion Tuition Refund Up to 5% 80% refund More than 5% to 10% 70% refund More than 10% to 25% 60% refund More than 25% to 50% 30% refund Over 50% No refund Student kits, uniforms, and materials that have been used or marked as personal property are non-refundable.
To remain in good standing at UNISS, students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). This includes a minimum grade average of 80 percent in both theory and practical work, consistent progress toward completing required clock hours, and professional conduct consistent with school policies.
UNISS Grading Scale
Grade Performance Level 90 to 100 Excellent 80 to 89 Satisfactory Below 80 Unsatisfactory Student progress is reviewed at regular evaluation periods. Students who fall below the required standards may be placed on academic probation and given a specified period of time to improve. Students who do not meet standards during probation may be dismissed from the program, with the option to appeal in writing to school administration.
UNISS programs are based on clock hours, as required by the North Dakota State Board of Cosmetology. Students must complete the full number of required hours for their program in order to graduate and qualify for licensure.
Students clock in and out each day using the school’s timekeeping system. Hours are credited only for time actively spent in scheduled educational activities. Because state regulations require actual clock hours of instruction, missed time cannot be excused and must be made up.
Students are expected to arrive on time and prepared. If a student arrives to class more than 15 minutes late, they will not be able to clock in and join the class until the top of the next hour. Repeated tardiness may result in lost clock hours or administrative action.
In limited circumstances, students may request a leave of absence from their program. Leaves are typically granted only for documented circumstances such as medical conditions, family emergencies, or other serious situations. Supporting documentation may be required, and requests must be approved by school administration prior to the start of the leave whenever possible.
A leave of absence does not reduce the number of clock hours required for program completion. Students who take an approved leave must return and complete all remaining required hours before graduating.
UNISS is committed to providing a transparent, respectful, and fair environment for all students. If a concern arises, we encourage open communication and resolution through the appropriate channels. Retaliation against students who file a complaint in good faith is strictly prohibited, and all concerns are handled professionally and, when possible, confidentially.
UNISS Complaint Procedure
Step Procedure Step 1 Speak directly with the instructor or staff member involved, if appropriate. Step 2 If the concern is not resolved, submit a written complaint to the Director of Education. Step 3 School administration will review the matter and provide a written response within 10 business days. Step 4 If the issue remains unresolved, students may contact the North Dakota State Board of Cosmetology for further guidance.
UNISS complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which protects the privacy of student education records. Education records include enrollment documentation, attendance records, academic progress records, financial documentation, and other information related to a student’s training.
Under FERPA, students have the right to:
- Inspect and review their education records within 45 days of request.
- Request amendment of inaccurate records.
- Provide written consent before disclosure of personally identifiable information, except where legally permitted.
- File a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education.
Access to student records is limited to authorized school personnel who require the information to perform their professional responsibilities. Records are maintained securely to protect student privacy.
UNISS complies with applicable federal and state laws related to accessibility and nondiscrimination. Reasonable accommodations may be considered for qualified individuals who require assistance in meeting the essential requirements of the program.
Students who believe they may require an accommodation are encouraged to contact school administration to discuss their needs. Requests for accommodations may require documentation and are evaluated on an individual basis.
UNISS maintains a drug-free training environment to protect the health and safety of students, staff, and clinic guests. The use, possession, distribution, or impairment from alcohol, illegal substances, or unauthorized drugs while attending school or participating in training activities is strictly prohibited. Students who appear to be under the influence may be subject to disciplinary action.
UNISS also operates as a weapons-free campus. Weapons are strictly prohibited on all UNISS property, at all times, regardless of concealed or open carry permit status. This includes, but is not limited to, firearms, knives beyond small personal utility tools, tasers or stun devices, explosive devices, and any object intended or used to cause bodily harm. Entry onto UNISS property constitutes agreement to comply with this policy.
UNISS is committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all students, faculty, staff, and guests. The school complies with applicable federal and state laws regarding campus safety, including the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).
Any crime, suspected crime, or emergency must be reported immediately to the School Administrator or Director of Education. If necessary, staff will contact local law enforcement or emergency responders.
In compliance with the Clery Act, UNISS prepares and distributes an annual security report by October 1 of each year. The report includes campus crime statistics for the prior three years, as well as policies and procedures related to safety and security. A copy of the report is available in the administrative office and upon request.
Evacuation and safety procedures are posted throughout the school, and staff will guide students and visitors to safe areas or evacuation points in the event of an emergency.
